On May 27, 2025, our Executive Director, Michael Murr, attended the “WiFi & Waffles” event hosted by National Capital FreeNet (NCF) and the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA). The gathering brought together community leaders, digital equity advocates, and partners to discuss the expansion of CommuniFi, NCF’s innovative community Wi-Fi initiative.

The event offered a unique blend of insightful discussions and delicious waffles, creating a warm and engaging atmosphere. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about the progress and future plans of CommuniFi, share experiences, and explore collaborative opportunities to bridge the digital divide in Ottawa.

Introducing CommuniFi: Expanding Digital Access

CommuniFi is NCF’s community Wi-Fi project aimed at providing free internet access in underserved neighbourhoods in Ottawa. Launched in December 2024, the first phase established a fixed wireless network at 251 and 255 Donald Street, offering free Wi-Fi in the indoor and outdoor common areas of these Ottawa Community Housing buildings. The initiative is a collaborative effort involving NCF, Ottawa Community Housing (OCH), Hiboo Networks, and CIRA, to address digital inequities in areas like Vanier, Overbrook, Lowertown, and Sandy Hill.

The second phase of CommuniFi aims to connect at least 10 additional community organizations within a 5 km radius of the initial sites, further expanding access to free Wi-Fi and digital literacy resources. This expansion is crucial in providing residents with opportunities for online learning, job searching, and staying connected with essential services.

For a detailed overview of the CommuniFi project, you can visit the NCF’s program page.

We are excited about the potential of NCF’s CommuniFi initiative to transform communities by providing reliable internet access and fostering digital literacy. As the project progresses, we look forward to supporting and participating in efforts that promote connectivity and inclusion for all residents.
