In only 7 days, Unleashed, The Social Enterprise Event will be kicking off with a special edition of our Executive Director & Board Chair Breakfast Series. Sponsored by United Way Ottawa, the morning will share a story of a local social enterprise and how they’ve grown to provide soup in Ottawa grocery stores.
This breakfast is open to the non-profit/charitable sector to answer questions about social enterprises, their models & operations, and to explore the opportunities with businesses that drive revenue with a social impact. Social enterprise is not the answer to all funding issues nor is social enterprise right for addressing all types of social challenges. That being said, there is room to contemplate how adopting a social enterprise approach could add value.
On Thursday, November 16th, 2017 the team at CSED along with our partners at United Way Ottawa will welcome Kim Oastler, Executive Director of ALSO (Alternative Learning Styles and Outlooks), Vanessa Hortie-Rogers, Board Treasurer, of ALSO, and Dave Massine, Owner of Massine’s Your Independent Grocer. Their morning discussion will cover how ALSO’s EAT MORE SOUP! social enterprise was founded, and how it grew to partner with local grocery stores.
Kim has enjoyed working at ALSO over the last 14 years. Kim’s leadership, vision, and creative spirit have allowed EAT MORE SOUP! to evolve from a student-led idea to a functioning social enterprise business over the course of the last year. Vanessa has been a member of the ALSO board of directors (treasurer) for five years. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant (Certified Management Accountant) who spends her weekdays working as an advisor in the federal public service, and her spare time volunteering, visiting friends and family and working on home renovation projects.
ALSO is a program for adults that offers one-to-one teaching in literacy, math, and life skills. More recently, ALSO began making and selling soup, through their social enterprise called EAT MORE SOUP!. Through this new product, ALSO has been successful in many local partnerships with grocery stores and a grocery chain in the city. One of their partners is Massine’s Your Independent Grocer.
Dave Massine, Owner of Massine’s Your Independent Grocer, will talk about the formation of the partnership and why it was an important piece in his mission to, quite literally, serve the community. Dave is a foodie. His whole family is. His 30+ years of experience in the industry has allowed him to partner with over 50 local food vendors and restaurants and sell hundreds of different locally grown and produced products in Massine’s Your Independent Grocer.
"Partnering with ALSO has been exciting for me. To be able to bring their EAT MORE SOUP! line to my customers has been fun. Customers love the product. This opportunity has been so much more than that”, comments Dave Massine upon reflecting on the partnership with EAT MORE SOUP!.
He also states, “the social programs that ALSO brings to life make this relationship even more fulfilling. To be able to be a small part of something that gives so much back to our community has been great. To me, this all rolls up to what owning a truly LOCAL business and being part of an exceptional community is all about.”
We look forward to sharing this success story, along with United Way Ottawa, to the Ottawa community and really championing the social enterprise approach to business.
